Feather Reed Grass (Calamagrostis x acutiflora)
Elegant upright ornamental grass with feathery summer plumes
Feather Reed Grass stands as one of the most architectural and visually striking ornamental grasses in modern gardens. This stunning vertical accent grows in neat, upright clumps that reach heights of 5-6 feet, creating dramatic columns of green foliage topped with stunning feathery plumes. The foliage emerges in spring with a bright green color, while the flower stems develop in early summer, starting as pink-tinged plumes that mature to golden wheat colors by late summer. Unlike many ornamental grasses that tend to flop or spread, Feather Reed Grass maintains its distinctly vertical form throughout the season, making it an excellent choice for creating strong structural elements in garden design.
This remarkable grass has an interesting historical background as one of the first ornamental grass hybrids, originating in Europe. The variety 'Karl Foerster', named after the famous German nurseryman who discovered it in the 1930s, was found growing in the Hamburg Botanical Garden. The plant is actually a sterile hybrid between Calamagrostis epigejos and Calamagrostis arundinacea, two species native to Europe and Asia. This chance hybrid became one of the most influential ornamental grasses in modern gardening, earning the prestigious honor of being named the Perennial Plant of the Year in 2001.
When it comes to growing conditions, Feather Reed Grass demonstrates remarkable adaptability while maintaining specific preferences. It thrives in full sun, although it can tolerate partial shade, particularly in warmer climates. Unlike many ornamental grasses that prefer poor soil, this grass actually performs best in rich, well-drained soil with consistent moisture. It showcases excellent cold hardiness (USDA zones 4-9) and begins its growing season earlier than many other ornamental grasses, providing early season interest. The vertical plumes emerge in June, maintain their form through winter, and can be left standing for winter interest until cut back in late winter or early spring.
Maintenance and potential issues are relatively minimal, making this grass a favorite among gardeners of all skill levels. The plant is notably disease-resistant and rarely troubled by pests. However, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. In areas with high humidity or poor air circulation, the grass may be susceptible to leaf spot diseases, though this rarely affects the overall health of the plant. Additionally, while the grass is remarkably sturdy, in areas with heavy clay soil or poor drainage, crown rot can become an issue during particularly wet winters. Division is typically necessary every 2-3 years to maintain vigor, as the center of the clump can die out if left unattended for too long.
For the garden designer or home landscaper, Feather Reed Grass offers versatile applications beyond its obvious ornamental appeal. Its strong vertical form makes it an excellent choice for creating living privacy screens when planted in masses, while single specimens can serve as dramatic focal points in mixed borders. The grass's ability to grow in relatively tight clumps makes it well-suited for smaller urban gardens, and its tolerance of road salt and urban conditions adds to its versatility. The plumes make excellent cut flowers, both fresh and dried, adding an extra dimension of usefulness to this already valuable garden plant. Whether used in contemporary or naturalistic garden designs, Feather Reed Grass brings movement, texture, and year-round interest to any landscape setting.
